When we design a display, the roofline is where we start. It’s the largest canvas on your home, and it’s what people see from the street. Almost every roofline we light gets the same treatment that’s made front porches glow for generations: C9 bulbs in warm white, spaced evenly and clipped clean along every edge. Here are five roof styles that reward that treatment beautifully.
1. Classic Gables
A gable is a triangle pointed at the sky, and outlining it turns your whole facade into an arrow of light. The peak becomes the focal point of the display, and symmetrical homes with matching gables look especially sharp — the repetition reads as intentional and polished.
2. Dormers
Dormers are easy to overlook and magical when you don’t. Tracing each little roofline adds a second layer of depth above the main run, so the house glows in tiers instead of a single flat line. It’s the detail neighbors notice without quite knowing why your home looks better.
3. Long Ranch Lines
Ranches have something two-story homes envy: one long, unbroken horizontal line. A single continuous run of warm-white C9s across that eave is clean, calm, and elegant. Consistent bulb spacing matters most here — any gap or sag shows on a straight line, which is exactly why we install every strand by hand with commercial clips.
4. Two-Story Colonials
Colonials carry their light high, so the display is visible from well down the street. Outlining the upper roofline — and often the porch or portico below it — frames the home’s symmetry the way it was designed to be seen. These are also the roofs where professional installation earns its keep; second-story ladder work is not a casual Saturday project.
5. Steep Peaks and A-Frames
Dramatic pitches make dramatic displays. A steep peak outlined in light towers over the yard and looks stunning from every angle. The steeper the roof, the trickier the install — and the more satisfying the result.
